In a letter addressed to the Health Secretary, I have raised concerns regarding the alarming backlog crisis at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
The figures I presented paint a distressing picture, particularly in the realm of Accident & Emergency (A&E) services, where over 14,000 individuals find themselves waiting for more than 4 hours, with a staggering 15.9% enduring waits exceeding the 12-hour mark. These prolonged waiting times not only jeopardize patient health but also underscore significant strains on the capacity and efficiency of the NHS, highlighting systemic challenges that demand immediate attention and action.
Moreover, I have emphasized the concerning delays in waitlists, with 40% of patients waiting longer than the stipulated 18-week period. Of equal concern is the revelation that only 69.5% of individuals are informed about their cancer diagnosis within a reasonable timeframe, a critical factor in improving both survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients.
As the Member of Parliament for Solihull, I am deeply troubled by the profound impact these backlogs have on the health and well-being of my constituents. Urgency is paramount, and as such, my letter explicitly requests a detailed explanation of the immediate steps being taken by the Government to alleviate backlog pressures and enhance timely access to NHS services.
I am unwaveringly committed to vigorously advocating for improved healthcare services, not only in Solihull but throughout the West Midlands region. In Parliament, I will persistently press for reforms, raising awareness and driving the conversation forward. I eagerly anticipate the swift and urgent response of Victoria Atkins, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, as we collectively work to address these pressing and critical issues facing our NHS.
