Julian Knight MP has pledged his support to Theresa May, the Home Secretary, in the contest for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
Her six years’ experience in the Home Office, widely recognised as one of the most difficult roles in Cabinet, has convinced him that she is the candidate best placed to rise to the challenges posed by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, such as negotiations with our European partners.
Julian also feels that Mrs May is the contender better placed to bring the Conservative Party together after the referendum campaign by appealing to a broad range of opinion both in the party and the country.
Commenting on his decision, Julian Knight said:
“Theresa May has held the toughest job in Government for the past six years, and is recognised as having done outstandingly well. This is a time for calm heads and steady nerves, and I feel confident that Mrs May is the best candidate for this difficult job.
“When making my decision I asked myself a very simple question: who did I want to be sat opposition Chancellor Angela Merkel, negotiating for the best interests of the UK? The conclusion was obvious.”
