Julian Knight MP petition calling on Solihull Council to strengthen anti-traveller defences in the borough has received almost 3,500 signatures, reflecting a surge in public concern about the recent spate of illegal camps.
After receiving numerous complaints from local residents about both the behaviour of the travellers and the official response from the authorities, Julian was determined to make sure that those affected have their voices heard loud and clear.
The strength of the local response to his petition, which is still available on Change.org, will strengthen his hand as he pushes the police and council officers both for a more effective immediate response and a better long-term strategy to protect Solihull’s open spaces.
Commenting on the complaints, Julian Knight said:
“I’m very disappointed that our town is suffering yet another bout of illegal camps – and in midsummer too, when we all want to be enjoying our many green and open spaces.
“That so many people have signed my petition shows how strongly local residents fee about these incursions, and highlights how important it is that the situation is brought under control.
“The power to evict travellers rests with council officers and the police, and whilst I understand that such large-scale and persistent traveller activity poses challenges, but residents should not be left feeling that reports of anti-social and even illegal behaviour have not been properly acted on.
“I am in close communication with the authorities and will continue to make sure that the voices of all those affected by these camps are heard loud and clear.”
