Julian Knight has met the first winner of ‘Solihull Points of Light’, his scheme to recognise and reward volunteering in our town.
Roy Middleton, a 90-year-old resident and war veteran, has volunteered with the Solihull branch of Parkinson’s UK since 2004, when his wife Janet was first diagnosed with the disease.
Julian surprised him with a certificate and bouquet of flowers, kindly donated by Kathryn Eadon of Fleur de Lis, ahead of the branch’s annual dinner.
He joined the committee after she passed in 2008 and remains actively involved to this day, taking part in everything from events organising to fundraising to visiting members in hospital.
Prior to this Roy and Janet spent two decades volunteering with Age UK, visiting and assisting elderly residents and helping them with their shopping.
Commenting on the award, Julian Knight said:
“I was delighted to be able to offer this recognition of Roy’s extraordinary record of service to our community. Men and women like him are the backbone of so many services that residents depend on, and I’m glad to give something back.
“One of the most rewarding parts of being an MP is the opportunity to meet so many extraordinary people in our town, and ‘Points of Light’ is my way of discovering and rewarding their contributions. If you know somebody who fits the bill, please get in touch.”
