Julian Knight, the MP for Solihull, has called on Solihull Council to take stronger action to ensure the safety of local children on the roads near our schools.
Following a traffic incident on Friday 22nd, in which a young girl was knocked down and had her arm broken, he wrote to the local authority to ask for improved facilities for pedestrians on Widney Lane.
Julian also wants them to reduce speed limits to 20mph in areas where children are likely to be crossing.
Explaining his demands, Julian Knight said:
“We have been very lucky that the recent incident in Widney Lane did not lead to tragedy – but we should not simply sit back and wait for a more serious accident to happen. There is clearly a problem for young people trying to cross the road in that area and it’s time for action.
“I have written to the council to ask for improved pedestrian facilities, but there are apparently practical difficulties to installing a proper crossing. If that is the case then the council should reduce speed limits on roads near our schools to make them safe for children. When it comes to speed, twenty is plenty.”
