Julian Knight MP has been personally thanked by one of the UK’s biggest debt advice charities for his role in campaigning for a vital change in the law.
StepChange Debt Charity has warmly welcomed Government plans, announced in June, to introduce a so-called ‘breathing space’ scheme, alongside statutory debt repayments. These will protection people in debt – and provide important incentives to seek debt advice – by providing a freeze on enforcement action, interest, and charges.
Writing to Julian, they said that parliamentary support had been ‘vital’ to delivering these important changes, and thanked Julian personally for his contribution to the campaign.
As a former personal finance journalist and ex-chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Alternative Lending, Julian has previously taken a close interest in this sector, personally leading the group’s investigations into the impact of various schemes on debtors.
Commenting on the news, Julian Knight said:
“I’m delighted that the Government is proceeding with this important reform. It benefits all sides to make sure that debtors have the space and support they need to get on top of their repayments and their lives, and introducing legal ‘breathing space’ is a big step in the right direction.
“Extreme debt can destroy lives, and I will always use my position in the House of Commons to support compassionate, common-sense measures such as this, as well as charities like StepChange which do so much to help those who need it.”
