Julian Knight has asked Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, what more his Department can do to drive up prosecution levels for domestic abuse.
Noting that the percentage of convictions secured in domestic abuse cases is at its highest level since 2010, the MP for Solihull urged the Government to do more to ensure prosecutions are brought and convictions secured.
This follows a range of new measures ministers have introduced to help protect people from abusive partners, including: new 'domestic abuse ASBOs'; classifying financial coercion as abuse; and ‘Claire’s Law’, a new right to check your partner's past.
Responding to Julian, the Home Secretary set out the new resources which have been invested in policing and added that they may need more powers in order to effectively tackle abuse and bring perpetrators to justice.
Speaking afterwards, Julian said:
“I’m proud that the Government is taking seriously the need to crack down on domestic abuse, and that good progress is being made in successfully prosecuting the people who perpetrate this vicious crime.
“We cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal now. The new measures recently announced must be matched by a sustained effort to ensure that the police and Crown Prosecution Service are able to identify, prosecute, and convict abusers.”
