Julian Knight MP has welcomed the many new animal welfare initiatives announced by the Government in recent months.
Last year he lobbied ministers to crack down on illegal puppy farming, and reported on the tough new measures the Government are taking to monitor breeders, which they aim to have in place next year.
These included modernising the licencing regime for dog breeding and requiring anybody breeding and selling more than three puppies in a 12-month period to be properly licenced. Now Julian is pleased to be able to update residents about the huge range of new steps the Government has taken in the past year.
These include:
- increasing the maximum sentence for animal cruelty from six months to five years
- mandating CCTV in slaughterhouses and recognising animal sentience in law
- tying farm subsidies to new welfare codes and controlling the exports of live farm animals after Brexit
- banning the sale of ivory
Commenting on news, Julian Knight said:
“As a keen animal lover, I share the belief of many residents that Britain should be setting international standards for animal welfare, and I’m delighted to see the Government taking such strong and sustained action on this important area.
“From the wellbeing of farm animals here in the UK to the future of endangered species around the world, ministers are demonstrating that Britain is and will remain a country that honours its responsibilities to the natural world.”
