Julian Knight MP was delighted to meet a local resident and congratulate him personally upon being awarded France’s highest honour.
The former soldier, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been granted the Légion d'Honneur – the Order of the Legion of Honour – for his part in the D-Day landings and the liberation of France.
Julian’s office has spearheaded the application for the past year, and he was fascinated to meet him face-to-face and hear his stories.
The French Government has announced that any living ex-serviceman who participated in the battle for France is eligible for the Legion of Honour, and Julian would be delighted to support the applications of any eligible local residents
Speaking after the meeting, Julian said:
“I’m very proud that the French Government has chosen to bestow its highest honour upon a member of our community, and I was fascinated to learn more about his extraordinary service on the beaches of Normandy.
“Our town has a deep and enduring respect for the Armed Forces, and I have always tried to use my role in Parliament to be a champion for the men and women who risk their lives to protect our nation and values.
“I’m sure there are other local residents who fought in France, and I would be very glad to support their application for the Légion d'Honneur if they got in touch with my office.”
