These are trying times for everyone. In Coronavirus we face not only a deadly threat to our health, but also a danger which forces us to do without so much of what makes life worthwhile.
How much easier it would be to face this national crisis in the company of our friends and loved ones over a few pints at the pub!
But such challenges have a habit of bringing out the best in us. Time and again, all over the country, we read reports of people stepping up to support each other, save lives, and protect the NHS.
The overwhelming majority of us have obeyed lockdown, despite the temptations of the glorious spring sunshine. Millions have offered to shop for those self-isolating. And more than three quarters of a million people answered the call for NHS volunteers – so many that the Royal Voluntary Service had to suspend applications!
Ever since I was first elected to represent Solihull, I’ve been bowled over by the strength of our town’s volunteer spirit. Time and again I’ve had the privilege of meeting local residents who generously give their time, energy, and expertise to enrich our community through charities, religious institutions, sports clubs, and more.
A few years ago, I ran a campaign called ‘Solihull Points of Light’ in which I asked you to get in touch and let me know about such individuals so I could meet them, offering a little recognition and helping them serve as an inspiration to others.
Now I want to revive it to celebrate those who are going above and beyond to help friends and neighbours during the current crisis. Whilst I won’t be able to meet them, I will post a photograph and message of thanks on my website and social media – and perhaps mention them in this column too!
So, if you know a person, group, or business who fits that description, please get in touch. Send their name, some more information about their work, their contact details, and a photograph to me at [email protected], and I’ll sort the rest.
In the meantime, remember that we call all play our part simply by observing social distancing and staying indoors.
