Solihull Train Station

In response to the recent announcement by the Transport Secretary regarding the potential closure of railway ticket offices, Julian Knight MP has taken swift action to safeguard the interests of local constituents.

Recognizing the vital role that ticket offices play in our community, particularly for the elderly and those less familiar with digital technology, Knight has sent a formal letter to the Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, voicing the deep-seated concerns of the Borough.

Julian Knight MP said:

As residents may be aware, the Secretary of State for Transport recently announced the potential closure of railway ticket offices, leaving many constituents deeply concerned about the future of accessible public transportation. As your local MP, I have taken immediate action by sending a letter to the Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, relaying the concerns of the Borough.

The impact of closing ticket offices would be far-reaching, especially for our elderly population, who have relied on these offices for personalized assistance for years. Not all residents have access to digital technology, making ticket offices a vital resource for equitable access to public transport.

While digital ticketing may be convenient for some, we must not overlook its complexities for others. The elderly, in particular, electronic ticketing systems confusing and overwhelming, leading to reluctance in using public transportation.

Public transportation is more than just a service; it is the lifeline that connects us as a community and fosters inclusivity. It is crucial that we ensure its accessibility for everyone, regardless of age or technological proficiency.

As Solihull’s MP, I will always ensure that residents have their concerns heard by the most senior in Government and over the summer recess in Parliament it shall be no different. I will be continuously working, submitting parliamentary questions to ministers and engaging local stake holders to ensure the best for our Borough.

Knight is urging all Solihull constituents to participate in the ongoing public consultation regarding these proposals. Feedback is invaluable and will play a critical role in shaping the future of public transportation in the area.
